"Housing should be based on need" – Alan

Alan was in Basingstoke yesterday for the BBC’s Question Time programme, where he discussed national security, grammar schools, social housing and the deputy leadership contest.

He reiterated his stance on social housing, saying: “Only 1% of social housing is occupied by foreign nationals. The problem is the amount of social housing that’s available. We’ve increased the amount of new build by 50%, but we need to go much much further, particularly in the South and South East where there is a real mismatch between supply and demand. So this is not an issue about immigrants taking social housing. It’s an issue about ensuring that we have enough social housing to fulfil the need.”

I agree with Alan here about

I agree with Alan here about housing stock - it needs to be increased. It is vital this is increased throughout the country. This is also a great problem in the north west too.

It is fine talking about

It is fine talking about building Council Housing, but the Govt has forced many Councils to transfer their Housing Stock and their Housing Staff to Trusts. They no longer have the people able to design, plan and build housing. All the trusts need to be returned to Council ownership, and all the money from rental income needs to be made available to Councils to use to build new houses. Subsidising the sell off of council housing has to stop.

It's fine for Alan to be so

It's fine for Alan to be so laid back about social housing because he personally has no need for it.

It's also fine to quote statistic of only 1% of housing is occupied by foreign nationals but like all statistics they don't tell the whole story 1% is the national average in some areas the level is in double figures and when you add to that those of foreign origin who now hold "easy to get" British nationality the picture is quite different.

It's also fine to say that we need to build more social housing for Gods sake you have been in power for over ten years even if you start right now it will not help those who are homeless now.

If you wish to be seen as a serious candidate for deputy leader you must deal with real social issues in a realistic way It's no good taking the high moral ground whilst Rome burns. Your liberal view on population numbers and social provision are fine as values but they don't lift one child out of poverty or put a roof over a homeless head real politics is about dealing with real problems and taking tough decisions leave the airy fairy to the Liberals.

PENSIONS PENSIONS PENSIONS

PENSIONS PENSIONS PENSIONS .Why is it that after FIVE court cases and parliamentary hearing all in favour of the victims of the pension scandal the new labour government still refuses to compensate victims. Some people have lost nearly all their pension entitlement and have fallen into the FAS financial assistance scheme. Others like myself fell into the PPF which although better than the FAS is still not good enough. After 34 years of working for the same company MY pension would not be 90% of what I was promised in fact it’s more likely to be about 45%. When you take into account indexing and inflation. PPF rules do nothing to guarantee MY pension. The only thing I could do was transfer out what I could knowing that I could at least save some of it .
CABINET MINISTERS save in the knowledge that their pensions are CAST IRON ,ROCK SOLID , CARVED IN GRANITE and paid for by the tax payer have done NOTHING to help the situation . GET OVER IT, IT’S MALADINISTRATION you need to sort it out or call an election and let the people decide.
